Cape May Advisory Committee on Municipal Taxation and Revenue

At the request of the CMTPA, in March 2020 City Council created this Advisory Committee to examine the ways the city raises revenue and to make recommendations for containment of increasing property taxes. To date the Committee has not been formed.

Public Safety Building

Plans are underway to replace both the aging Firehouse and the Police Station. Two separate Bonding Referenda have been forwarded:  one for $15 million to fund a combined Public Safety Building and one for $5 million to replace the firehouse.  Full cost for the bond, the finishing expense and the operating expenses are unknown, but estimates are ranging from $10 to $25 million.

The Sewell Tract

This 100+ acre tract of environmentally sensitive wetland will have a significant fiscal impact on taxpayers.  Two separate issues have emerged: 1. the preservation of this critical natural barrier, and 2. the resolution of a 30 year ligation between the owners of the property, the State and Federal government and a private group of citizens who have joined the litigation.

Covid 19 Response Measures

Significant budgeted municipal revenues are not being realized due to the city’s measures to assist the tourism industry in coping with the Covid Impact.

Beach Utility Fees and Costs

Municipal revenues have been adversely affected both by Covid Impact and by the creation of a seasonal reusable Commercial Beach Tag
